Ulmus americana, American elm,
has 3 recognized habits. The picture on the left shows the widely recognized "vase
shape". |

The red flowers appear before
the leaves. The flowers are in clusters and are on drooping stalks that are about
1" long. The fruit is a flat samara that has hair around the edge and a deep
notch at the tip. The leaves appear after development of the fruit. |

elm is pointed. The leaf is darker above and veins are very noticeable both on
