Winter photos of Rhus glabra. Unlike Rhus typhina, the branches, twigs and fruit of Smooth sumac are not covered with hairs. Rhus glabra sheds its leaves in the fall, but the fruit may remain all winter. |

In summer, the leaves of the Rhus typhina are dark green and smooth above but the undersides are pale. The leaves turn red in the fall. Smooth sumac has alternate, compound leaves, 16 to 24 inches long. The leaflets are sharply pointed at the tip and narrowed or rounded at the base. The edges of the leaves are finely serrated. |
