The furrows in the trunk and branches are the major identifying feature of the interesting "snake-like bark" maples, but it is still difficult to distinguish between the various "striped maples".

In this picture  of the Acer tegmentosum, the buds are nearly ready to open. The buds are valvate, striping is apparent on the branches and both leaf scars and bud scars can be seen.

This Manchurian Striped Maple is not the same tree as the one shown above. It was also near Parking 16. To reach it you crossed the road and take the path next to Flowering Dogwood into a section that is marked as "Maples" on the map. This tree was removed in the summer of 2005. The photos below came from this tree.

Leaves of the Manchurian Striped Maple are opposite, simple with 3 - 5 lobes. With the tips of each lobe pointing forward. The edges of the leaves are finely toothed.

The small, yellow-green flowers of the Acer tegmentosum emerge with the leaves in mid-April. The flowers are on pendulous racemes.
